Introducing: Airplane Views

Inspired by a rare solo flight and the hush of sky above the clouds—my newest painting, Airplane Views.

When I first started painting clouds, I was all about the window seat. I’d spend entire flights with my face to the glass, photographing every shift in light and texture, completely mesmerized by what was happening outside. Something about being above the weather, seeing the layers from that high-up perspective—it never got old.

Nineteen years later (and with three kids now in tow), I still love that seat, even if I don’t always end up there. These days, my kids usually take over a row of their own, and I’m somewhere nearby—still stealing glances at the sky when I can. Thankfully, I’ve saved hundreds of those flight photos over the years, and honestly, I carry a lot of them in my head.

Recently, though, I had a window all to myself again. It was one of those flights where the descent was just stunning—cool light, soft layers, that hush you only get when you're above it all. I knew right away I needed to paint it.

Airplane Views is a 12” round (tondo) painting that came out of that moment. I loved making this piece—it felt like tapping back into something I’ve always been drawn to. And after finishing it, I’m thinking... we might need a few more.
